Directly experiencing the places and material culture of Greek and Roman antiquity, not to mention the food and languages, sights and sounds of contemporary Greece and Italy, profoundly enriches anyone’s study of the classical world. Working at classical archaeological sites can take students not only to Greece and Italy but also to Israel, Great Britain, the Ukraine, Tunisia, Provence, or Turkey. Many study away programs, especially the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS) in Rome and the College Year in Athens (CYA), also offer wonderful opportunities for Classics majors. Both abroad and especially in the United States, students can begin or continue their study of Greek or Latin over the summer.
